Allow me to explain Step 1, in slightly more graphic language. I had to be beaten to a phucking pulp by alcohol, AND have enough seriously negative consequences in my life, that I could no longer live with the guy in the mirror. I'm not saying it HAS to be that way for everyone, but I've attended enough meetings to know that few people will "concede to their innermost selves", without the "pitiful, and incomprehensible demoralization"! Also known as a "severe ass-kicking"! (Physically, mentally, emotionally, and morally.)

12 prayers and 12 meditations Every time you se the words "we asked" it's a prayer 1986 Al Anon list of CAL p 89 Big book 1. P83 so we clean house,asking each morning that God show me the way of patience tolerance kindliness and love towards ( everyone) 2. What's the best plan for our day 3. 9th step promises are not the only promises. 4. We need to plug into God. Bring God with you wherever you go 5. Continue to watch for selfishness dishonesty resentment and fear. WHEN these crop up we asked God at once to remove thrm. Discuss them with someone immediately ( apologise if appropriate) turn to someone I can help. 6. P85 maintenance of our spiritual condition. Bring God into all of our activities 7. Daily inventory and spot check and night time 8. 12 questions was I resentful dishonest afraid the day before P67 though we did not like their symptoms they were sick too. WE ASKED GOD how to grant them the same grace we would have a sick friend. 9. Pray for those we resent focusing on our own character defects 10. Fear underpins anger. 11. 12. Tolerance is something you put up with. Tolerant view is changing your attitude

Al anon does not use AA literature because perceiving yourself as the victim of an alcoholic after years of abuse, and then coming out of denial about exactly why you chose to be in relationship with an alcoholic, is APPARENTLY very different from coming out of denial about how your drinking has affected you and others. Of course its the same situation really but it takes a lot of recovery in al anon before it becomes obvious.
